Ark pottery is a real cottage industry. The potters work in the former dairy building adjacent to their home, a thatched Devon longhouse. Established in the 1970’s, it is one of the few working potteries in Devon where visitors can still see pots being made by traditional hand "throwing".

 

Vaughan Glanville trained at Exeter College of Art and Reading University. After several years as an art teacher, he became a full time potter/sculptor. He mainly “throws” pots in the traditional manner on the pottery wheel, but sometimes sculpts separate pieces, or in combination with thrown work. There is a continuous exhibition at Ark Pottery. Some pieces are now available to buy online, but he recommends a visit to the studio where possible to talk about and handle the works.

 

Angela Glanville trained at Hornsea College of Art, London, Exeter College of Art and Reading University. She spent several years teaching before becoming co-founder of Ark Pottery; her main contribution is the range of hand modelled animals, which she designs. She also has an input into decorating some of Vaughan’s pots.
